The Star

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 FEBRUARY 2012 - The Government, through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, remains committed in carrying out the initiatives under the GTP’s Rural Basic Infrastructure NKRA, which aims to bring development to the rural and remote areas of the country.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the construction of rural roads, connection of water and electricity supply as well as provision of houses remained the focus of the ministry to look after the well-being of those living in the rural areas.

This year, he said the ministry aimed to construct 1,350km of rural roads nationwide, of which 462km would be built in peninsular Malaysia, 443km in Sarawak and 455km in Sabah.

Shafie said the ministry exceeded its initial targets set last year and expected to accomplish more rural development initiatives this year.

He attributed the success to the teamwork among all related parties at all levels.

He hoped 2012 would bring success to the ministry in terms of gaining the trust of the rural community to champion their welfare.
