11 JULY 2012 - Malaysian Bar Council chairman Lim Chee Wee proposed to make Federal Court judges to declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) so to make their declaration legally binding.
He pointed out that it is an offence under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 to make false declaration. Moreover, MACC is also empowered to audit the assets they declared.
Therefore, he suggested that they should be made to declare their assets for each year they have served as a Judge and continue to do so until their retirement, adding that we can also learn from India to declare assets of Supreme Court Judges online.
On Monday, Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria was quoted as saying judges have been instructed not to forge close relations with politicians and businessmen to avoid negative perception of the judiciary.
